How to paint a new wall

After the walls of any house or building have been erected, you should ensure that you take the necessary steps to successfully paint the walls. Do not short-change this task. A poorly painted room will diminish the aesthetic properties of even the most expertly crafted room. Read on for easy-to-understand instructions on how to paint a new wall.

To get started you will need:

  • Newspaper
  • Vacuum or duster
  • Cloths
  • Painter’s tape
  • Primer
  • Caulk gun
  • Joint compound or spackle
  • Brush
  • Roller
  • Roller tray
  • Paint

Step 1

To begin, you should remove dust from the wall with a vacuum cleaner. You can then give the walls a wipe to make sure that you remove any dust or dirt that the vacuum cleaner may have missed.

Step 2

You should then protect the floor by lining it with newspaper. Adjacent surfaces can be protected by lining it with painter’s tape.

Step 3

Thereafter, you need to prime the walls. Primer can be applied with a roller or a brush. Make sure that you leave it to dry for at least two hours before you move on to the next step.

Step 4

In addition, there may be some spot-primes for you to do, in case you missed any areas. Make sure that you cover the primer and priming tools with a plastic packet to stop it from drying out.

Step 5

Allow the wall to dry and caulk any gaps with a caulk gun.

Step 6

Choose a paint that is going to compliment the room and is relevant to the interior decorations.

Step 7

The paint should be applied with a paint brush and roller brush. Start by painting the trim with a paint brush. You can then use a roller brush to paint the rest of the wall. Roll the paint onto the wall using a “W” or “M” shape. After you have painted the entire room, allow the paint to dry for a few hours. Thereafter you can apply a second coat, if required.
